Algora
Co-founded a value-added voice services company in Barcelona and built its platform from zero. It ran 10 months of commercial activity before winding down.
The problem
Algora set out to offer value-added voice services to professionals and communities, from Barcelona. As co-founder and CTO, I had to get a working voice platform into customers' hands with no existing infrastructure to build on.
What I built
- I designed and built the platform from zero.
- The voice side ran on open-source telecom software, Kamailio and FreeSWITCH, deployed on Kubernetes on GCP.
- The web front end was Vue.js, with PostgreSQL and Redis for data.
- Infrastructure was defined as code with Terraform and shipped through GitLab CI.
Decisions and trade-offs
- An open-source voice stack (Kamailio, FreeSWITCH) instead of a commercial platform — full control over what the product could do — I had to run and maintain it myself.
- Infrastructure as code from day one — a reproducible platform with a very small team — time spent on infrastructure instead of product.
Result
The platform went live and Algora ran 10 months of commercial activity. The venture then wound down.
Stack
Kubernetes · Kamailio · FreeSWITCH · Vue.js · Terraform · PostgreSQL · Redis · GCP · GitLab CI
Takeaway
Not every venture works, and a platform that runs well is not the same thing as a business that lasts. Algora taught me that building the product is the easier half; the rest is finding people who need it enough to keep paying for it.
